I Wonder ...

I wonder if schools today are creating future generations of swayback adults. I go out in the morning or afternoon and I see little kids hefting backpacks that would flatten a donkey -- all because they don’t give kids lockers any more.  Are they doing this up north also?. Where do the students store their galoshes and heavy coats?  Gee, we used to keep all sorts of things in our lockers. We even had dry socks so we could change if our feet got wet walking to school.  I know, no lockers is so children can’t store guns and drugs in them. Seems to me there ought to be a better solution. This strikes me as chopping down the tree so you don’t have to rake leaves.

Most of the schools here still have lockers (the junior high where I work does). Even so, the kids STILL haul almost everything around in those backpacks...and they weigh a TON. I'll admit that I'd never heard of the no-locker thing, until my nephew started high school in the next town and told me they removed all the lockers from his school. Couldn't they hide stuff in their backpacks as easily as their lockers? Removing the lockers doesn't make sense to me.

The same has been true in India forever I guess - most schools don't have the concept of lockers.

Everyone jokes that whether the kids learn enough at school to get into a good profession or not, they at least have the backup choice of being a luggage porter - what with all the training they get lifting their HEAVY back-packs!!!
